Network levels:

Network level 2

According to dibkom (German Institute for Broadband Communication gGmbH), network level 2 is the “regional wide area level.” But you could also say it’s the thickest cable of them all.

Network levels: NE 2

The data highway

Unsurprisingly, network level 2 connects the headend, often referred to as level 1, to level 3. It is probably the least spectacular network level, but without it, nothing would work.

This often involves traveling considerable distances and transferring huge amounts of data. Mostly at the speed of light, because network level 2 now relies almost exclusively on fiber optics.

Side note: Yes, here you can really talk in a German style of “data autobahn”. The world’s first (!) local fiber optic networks were put into service by the German Federal Post Office under the name “OPAL” (for optical connection line) as early as 1993.

AND network levels – NE2: The thickest cables of all

These information highways naturally require careful planning and documentation. And support tailored to operational activities. Because if problems arise at this level, they are considerable.

What has been installed where? And what is connected to what? In other words: Who is affected by the error message that just appeared? Nobody needs a major disruption whose effects are difficult to estimate. Never.

Of course, this requires an appropriate software solution that allows you to retrieve up-to-date data at any time.
